SilverStar Mountain Resort is a charming smaller ski destination, with an architectural style, colour and character reminiscent of an old mining town. There’s nothing quite like SilverStar anywhere else in Canada. It’s easy and a perfect fit for families, to enjoy loads of groomed family friendly terrain for all levels of ability.

Equally, SilverStar delivers the goods with loads of challenging terrain, and proudly boasts a reputation for reliable champagne powder snow, particularly appreciated over on the Putnam Creek backside, with plenty of double black chutes and steeps.  Many of SilverStar’s runs are named after old silver mining claims.

SilverStar is special – a big mountain, a small town feel, with all the terrain you’d expect at a larger resort, without the crowds. All with true mid-mountain ski-in, ski-out access.

SilverStar is inland from Vancouver (YVR) — around 4.5 hours by road and serviced by Kelowna International Airport (YLW).

SilverStar has a well-deserved reputation as a family friendly resort, steeped in mining history. The resort offers true ski-in, ski-out access to 132 runs and 12 gladed areas serviced by 10 lifts. The size is just right for the kids to safely explore the mountain, and enjoy the freedom around the intimate village. The double-black runs challenge the more experienced skiers and riders.

You will find long-time residents and local characters that help give SilverStar its safe, neighbourhood community feel.  A chairlift ride, most likely might find you with locals who are willing to share their secrets that have kept them calling SilverStar home for so long.

The variety of trails and terrain spread across 3,282 acres of skiable terrain is both enchanting and exhilarating for skiers and riders alike. There are four mountain faces, including the world renowned Putnam backside. Here you can play in 1900 acres of challenging double black diamond steeps, for those keen for new and bigger adventures.

SilverStar boasts Canada’s largest daily groomed network of cross-country trails, with 34 miles (55km) of Nordic ski trails from green to blacks to suit beginners to Olympic level athletes, including two certified biathlon ranges.

SNOW HOW TIP: No surprise that SilverStar was awarded #1 Canadian XC Resort (with Sovereign Lake) by USA Today in 2018.

There are no international hotel chains at SilverStar, which is in keeping with its’ authentic charm. Rather, there is a good variety low rise condominium and hotel style accommodation, to suit all budgets. From luxury, slope-side condos like Snowbird Lodge, to more modest hotel style rooms, and many freestanding homes and chalets. Most are ski-in, ski-out; spilling straight into the pedestrian, ski-through village, or located in an area known as the Knoll, with excellent access to chairlifts.

Aerial view of SilverStar

On the après ski scene, at SilverStar there are some totally unique winter activities such as ski-in, ski-out 10 pin bowling; a dinner to the Paradise Camp driven in a snow cat; climbing walls in the National Altitude Training Centre; and fat biking on snow, just to name a few.

There are a reasonable offering of bars and restaurants, however don’t come to SilverStar just for the nightlife. If après ski is your priority, then honestly Whistler or Banff is the place to be seen. This resort is about the powder snow; the skiing and riding; and reconnecting with your family and friends.

SilverStar has become a real favourite with many of our clients – particularly families and cross-country ski enthusiasts. We would recommend you consider this resort if you are planning a vacation to the interior of British Columbia. Many visitors book a dual mountain ski vacation choosing SilverStar with Sun Peaks or Big White. The inter-resort transfer access is straightforward.

SilverStar retains the title of having the longest running recreational downhill event in Canada, since its inception in 1981. The Over-The-Hill-Downhill still attracts recreational ski racers from across North America every February.  This is a seriously popular event, with training camps available for those wishing to get into shape.

Over the Hill Downhill
Over the Hill Downhill event – a fun day for all

It’s time to dig out the long skis, the race suit, your need for speed. This incredibly fun and long running recreational downhill ski race pits individuals and teams of four against each other for the glory of being the fastest down the mountain. Teams are entered in a category based on the combined team age ranging from 65 to 225+ years.

Like other resorts in the interior region of British Columbia, SilverStar enjoys exceptional light dry champagne powder snow. It is a completely different microclimate compared to Whistler on the west coast, and not as cold as the Rocky Mountain ski resorts of Lake Louise and Banff. It We recommend definitely factoring this in, when choosing your ski destination. Knee-deep, light, fluffy champagne powder, and relatively milder temperatures, averaging 23F (-5C).

The resort historically averages an annual snowfall of around 23 ft (7 m) without any snowmaking being required. This provides a perfect playground for snow enthusiasts of all abilities to enjoy everything SilverStar serves up: exceptional gladed areas, steep double black chutes with powder stashes, and the consistent corduroy groomers.

The colourful low-rise village sits mid-mountain which means you are never far from the ski runs and lifts. In 2018, SilverStar installed an 8 seater gondola operating from the village centre to the summit. The village is quite small. Accommodations nestle quietly amongst the 18 pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants and six retail stores. There are options for grocery shopping both on-mountain and home delivery.

The colourful and authentic old mining town of SilverStar

It takes approximately 10 minutes to walk (in ski boots) from one end of the village to the other. Townhouses and chalets are generally another 10-15 minutes’ walk from the village. A free shuttle bus connects the village and accommodation areas, operating on a continuous loop.

SilverStar is worth a visit.  Many clients keep returning, because they love the terrain, the laid-back lifestyle and the charm. This hill has something for everyone. There are no lift lines and great snow. No wonder the locals love SilverStar. Our nordic ski clients love SilverStar too. The world class cross-country trails, the tracks are set daily; ensures our cross-country friends are very much in their happy place at SilverStar. The snow quality is always reliable, and the après ski, albeit low key, is authentic and fun. SilverStar is very kid friendly and also pet friendly.

We would recommend for your first visit to Silver Star to allow at least 4-5 days to really unwind, and enjoy this classic ski resort, and old mining town. Consider a dual mountain resort vacation with either Sun Peaks or Big White. You too might fall in love with the Star and return year after year, like many others. Book now.

There are two main accommodation areas. The inner village centre where you can stay at Snowbird Lodge, the resorts most luxurious condo style accommodation. For more mid-range options, Vance Creek Hotel and Chilcoot Lodge, and the Bulldog Hotel are worth consideration.

A short 10 minute walk, or free shuttle bus ride you’ll find Firelight Lodge and Creekside Townhouses and condos. Both are excellent choices, being close to Brewer’s Pond Ice skating and Tubetown area, as well as ski to the Silver Queen Chair.  The nearby Knoll area, is home to many chalets and townhouses including the Grandview Condominiums.
